Math and Science in the Real World: A Parent's Guide, produced by The Futures Channel, contains the "road map" that parents can  follow with their children to ensure success in education. What's in the kit?

Each kit contains:

  • Math....Who Needs It?!  This one hour program features master and legendary teacher Jaime Escalante, joined by celebrity guests including Bill Cosby, the late jazz great Dizzy Gillespie, and comedians ranging from Paula Poundstone to D.L. Hughley to bring home the message that math isn't something to be afraid of--it's something to use.

  • Math and Science in the Real World, a VHS compilation containing 10 micro-documentaries featuring professionals in real-world careers ranging from structural engineering and concert acoustics to tornado chasing and Oceanography. All of these professionals use both math and science daily to succeed on the job.

In addition, this VHS cassette contains four episodes of the award-winning series, The Eddie Files. The series is told from the point of view of "Eddie," a fictional 11-year-old student. Eddie's teacher is Kay Toliver of New York City's East Harlem Tech/P.S. 72, profiled in FASE's PBS special Good Morning Miss Toliver. Ms. Toliver's classroom lessons ignite Eddie's imagination, inspiring him to find out more about the world outside the classroom. Eddie meets, and photographs, professionals--architects to drummers, inventors to bug farmers--and keeps files about things he might like to do someday.

  • "Want this Job? Do Your Math." CD-ROM, designed to show both parents and students that math and science are important parts for the "dream jobs" of the future. The series is comprised of interviews with 15 professionals, in fields ranging from marine biology to skateboard design. Each segment has accompanying materials that enable students to test their skills for the field.

  • User handbook - this 40-page guide provides detailed instructions on the use of the kit at home, a viewing guide for Math...Who Needs It?!, profiles of professionals, career information and activities that parents can do with their children.

What will the results be?

When students discover that their lessons have something to do with something they might like to do later in life, it has a powerful motivating effect. Parents can help this along by looking for math and science in things they do or see with their children, and talking about your observations.

Mathematics and science are not just something children must do because "it's good for them."  They are tools that can help make their dreams come true.

Parents WANT their children's dreams to come true. Math and Science in the Real World will give parents the tools needed to become more interested and involved in their child's education.
